What Is LUMA Luxury Matchmaking?

LUMA Luxury Matchmaking is a matchmaking service that caters to what the website calls “elite bachelors and bachelorettes,” which seem to consist of executives, entrepreneurs, high-net-worth individuals, and even celebrities.

LUMA matchmakers have a depth of experience in date coaching and matchmaking and work with clients one and one, learning about their preferences, lifestyle, and past relationships to help them understand who their perfect match might be. The LUMA team caps the number of paying clients to 15-20 per matchmaker, meaning that each matchmaking journey receives dedicated time and attention.

Is it LUMA or Luma or Luma Search?

The name of the matchmaking company is LUMA (all caps) Luxury Matchmaking; however, it’s not treated consistently across its website, as “Luma Luxury Matchmaking” is also used. The company’s shortened name is LUMA, and “lumasearch.com” is the name of the website URL.

Around 2009, LUMA founder April Davis originally launched her matchmaking company under the name Cupid’s Cronies. Then, in 2016, the company decided to rebrand, changing the name to LUMA Luxury Matchmaking, stating in a press release that the new name better reflects the services it provides.

While a rebrand shouldn’t be cause for alarm—many companies make this change as their audience and services evolve—the inconsistent treatment of the name on its website might cause confusion or distrust for some people.

What Are LUMA’s Reviews Like?

We’ve searched high and low to understand how people feel about LUMA.

LUMA Reviews on Reddit

There aren’t many reviews of LUMA on Reddit. One particularly negative conversation titled “Beware of Luma Matchmaking” makes claims against the company, but they seem to be hyperbolic in nature. While this person may have had a bad experience, it’s difficult to understand the specifics of what exactly happened.

There are a few other mentions of LUMA on subreddits, and they are also mostly negative.

LUMA Reviews on Facebook

We searched LUMA’s main Facebook page “LUMA – Luxury Matchmaking Luxe” as well as its city-specific pages, but none of the pages are rated or have reviews.

LUMA Reviews on Yelp

LUMA’s reviews on Yelp aren’t very positive, with 2.3 out of 5 stars. Most of the reviews seem to be from past clients who believe they were duped into paying for a service that isn’t what it claims to be—that it promised things that it didn’t deliver on and didn’t produce quality (“luxury”) matches. One reviewer says that LUMA might have been one of the “worst purchases of my life.”

LUMA Reviews on BBB

On the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website, LUMA has a rating of 4.59 out of 5 stars, with more than 180 reviews total. The positive reviews talk about the great curated dates, compatible matches that met their criteria, and specific matchmakers who provided impeccable service. Additionally, many people appreciate the ability to share and receive post-date feedback.

There are only a handful of one- and two-star reviews, some of which mention feeling taken advantage of financially, how some matches didn’t live up to their initial criteria, and being surprised at the amount of time between client sign-up and getting a match. But overall, the Better Business Bureau reviews are glowing.

LUMA Reviews on Glassdoor

A look at LUMA on Glassdoor shows that 100% of current or past employees would recommend the company to a friend. The 16 reviewers note the positive aspects of the company, like being part of a great team, the ability to help people find love, and the supportive and flexible work environment.

Does LUMA Have Any Complaints or Lawsuits?

LUMA has five complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau, two of which have been resolved. The theme of the complaints is not being satisfied with the service. A couple of the reviews revolve around matches that misrepresented themselves in their profiles and matchmakers not making matches according to the client’s criteria.

It doesn’t seem like LUMA has any lawsuits filed against it. A Reddit post claims that the person “took them to court and won easily,” but we haven’t been able to substantiate that claim through an internet and court records search.

So Is LUMA Legit or a Scam?

It’s a valid question, but LUMA is a legitimate company that provides matchmaking services to its clients. While some reviewers call it a scam, others rave about their experiences—it should be up to you to decide.

How does LUMA Work?

With LUMA Luxury Matchmaking, you can either be a passive member of its database, where you’ll only have the option of being matched, or a paying member, where you’ll be assigned a matchmaker who will conduct searches of the LUMA network to find your ideal match.

Candidates are prescreened before being accepted into the company’s database (so not just anyone is accepted), plus your profile is confidential, only shared with potential matches.

For paying members, matchmakers provide date coaching and can even connect you with other experts and professionals, like stylists, dermatologists, and more, to help show off your best self.

How Much Does LUMA Cost?

LUMA’s website doesn’t include specific prices for matchmaking packages; however, it does note that costs range from $0 to $100,000, the free option being reserved for those who want to be passive members of LUMA’s database. Clients can customize their plan, meaning that the price depends on the features you choose.

Is LUMA Worth the Money?

Deciding if LUMA is worth the money should depend on your situation, your budget, and your takeaway from the reviews of the company. If you’re willing to spend up to $100,000 to potentially find a match and the matchmaking service aligns with your needs, LUMA could be a good fit.

What Is LUMA’s Success Rate?

LUMA claims an 85% success rate, which refers to the number of clients who begin serious relationships while being LUMA members. It’s important to note that LUMA counts in their success rate members who enter relationships with individuals outside of the LUMA database (not using a LUMA matchmaker).

The Takeaway

Before you decide on the best matchmaking service, make sure to weigh the pros and cons. For instance, LUMA Luxury Matchmaking is overall well reviewed and claims a high success rate, but it does seem on the expensive side and reviewers complain that some matches aren’t top-notch.
